Video: Deciding which depression treatment to try first

By Mayo Clinic staff

Transcript

Kristin Vickers Douglas, Ph.D., Mayo Clinic mental health specialist

Typically clinicians are going to look at the severity of your symptoms and recommend treatment based on that. So for a patient who has symptoms in the severe range, typically medication and therapy both are recommended. If you have very mild symptoms, perhaps some self-management strategies that you can do on your own with scheduled reassessment will be appropriate. The treatment recommendations will really be matched to you and the severity of your symptoms. But your treatment preferences will be considered as well. So it's not your responsibility to figure that out on your own. Go in, meet with a mental health professional or a primary care provider and get started in the process of evaluating your symptoms and recognizing what treatment options can work for you.
