Dr. John Wilkinson is a consultant in the Department of Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and an assistant professor of family medicine in the College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Wilkinson has a longstanding interest in continuing medical education and has been the director for numerous courses, including serving as co-director for clinical reviews, one of Mayo's flagship courses. He also serves on several other education-related committees.

In addition, Dr. Wilkinson has been associated with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI), in Bloomington, Minn., for many years, serving on its board of directors. ICSI, a collaboration of more than 40 health care organizations in the region, is dedicated to championing health care quality and to helping its members accelerate the implementation of best clinical practices. Since 1997, Dr. Wilkinson has been the leader of several work groups that have developed and continuously updated clinical practice guidelines regarding menopause and the use of hormone replacement therapy, preventive services, and chronic disease prevention.

In September 2005, Dr. Wilkinson was among the first group of volunteers deployed to Louisiana as part of Minnesota Lifeline, a joint endeavor of Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and the College of St. Catherine. In the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the group provided basic medical care to evacuees in shelters, carried out mass immunizations, and established primary care clinics at local public health centers and schools.

Dr. Wilkinson is a graduate of St. Olaf College (which honored him and his wife jointly with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002), Mayo Medical School and Mayo Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Wilkinson has also received the prestigious Karis Award from Mayo Clinic.
